The free Better Returns Programme (BRP) event, which took place at the Rheged Centre, Penrith, on 30 June, attracted over 100 beef and sheep farmers from Less Favoured Areas to hear experts and experienced producers speak on areas of management relating to upland production.

On the agenda were presentations from Kate Phillips of ADAS, who urged producers to analyse blood samples from their stock before making any decisions on trace element and mineral supplementation, and GrassMaster Charlie Morgan, who stressed the importance of soil management:

“Soil nutrient status and condition directly affect the quality of the feed that you can produce,” he said.

“I believe that not testing your soil, and therefore wasting money on incorrect fertiliser applications, represents one of the biggest unseen losses to agriculture.

“Too many farmers have forgotten where their spades are - we must get back to digging holes, assessing soil condition and testing for the nutrients you need!”

Farmers Simon Bainbridge from Northumberland and Richard Findlay from North Yorkshire explained the changes going on in their businesses, highlighting the value of farmer collaboration, openness to change and challenging tradition.

All presentations from the conference are now available to download at www.eblex.org.uk

The conference is the forerunner to a series of progressive producer groups focused on uplands livestock producers to be run by the BRP in the future.
