In its 32nd year, the YCC programme is a comprehensive, nationwide tour of beef industry sectors, created to enhance leadership skills in young beef industry professionals. Participants were selected by their fellow cattlemen and women to participate in the 2011 class. 2011 YCC Chairman J.J. Goicoechea, a Nevada rancher and veterinarian, said the programme is focused on preparing the next generation of cattlemen and women to serve as leaders and advocates for their industry.

“YCC is a programme like none other in the beef industry. NCBA prepares future leaders involved in various segments of the beef industry to better understand all components of this very diverse industry,” said Goicoechea, who also serves as president-elect for the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association. “Expanding the knowledge base of those of us that make our living providing safe and affordable beef for the world is a critical part of sustaining cattle ranches throughout rural America.”

Participants will hear from NCBA staff and representatives from Safeway; CattleFax; US Meat Export Federation; and JBS in Denver this week. The group will then travel to Chicago to visit the Chicago Board of Trade/Chicago Mercantile Exchange and OSI Industries.

Attending this year’s conference are 50 beef industry professionals representing virtually all segments of the profession. Also attending the 2011 YCC program is NCBA President-Elect J.D. Alexander, a Nebraska cattlemen.

“The participants of YCC come with a wide array of expertise within the industry. From retailers to cow-calf producers to feeders to agribusiness to packers, we have the bases covered,” said Mr Alexander. “We are cattlemen no matter what segment of the industry we work in and it is pertinent that we all maintain a strong understanding of all facets.”

YCC, which is sponsored by JBS and JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, Elanco Animal Health, and John Deere will conclude June 9, 2011, in Washington, D.C., with legislative visits and briefings from John Deere, U.S Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and NCBA staff.
