Currently Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, Dr Grandin has advised some of the largest global processors on animal welfare and handling at slaughter. Her handling systems are in use across the world, including in North America where nearly half the cattle in meat plants are handled by systems she has developed. In 2010, her life story was turned into a Hollywood biopic starring Claire Danes.

The free Better Returns Programme (BRP) event will include Dr Grandin carrying out an evaluation of the farm’s new cattle handling system. In addition, breeding specialist Sam Boon will highlight the importance of using EBVs to get the most from the herd.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer our levy payers the opportunity to hear a world-renowned expert such as Dr Grandin speak at a practical on-farm workshop,” said Dr Phil Hadley, EBLEX senior regional manager – southern region.

“Handling and moving animals are not only time-consuming tasks, they are also unnatural activities which can cause stress and compromise overall performance if they are not managed effectively.

“Improving cattle handling has a direct impact on meat quality, therefore better handling can in turn generate better returns for producers.”

The free BRP event will take place at Manor Farm, Marcham, near Abingdon on Wednesday 29 June 2011, from 12-4pm.
