Cattle Trade Picks Up Prior To Easter
IRELAND - There was some improvement to report on the cattle trade this week as demand builds in advance of Easter, reports Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board.

Quotes for R grade steers this week under the Quality Payment System were generally still making in the range of €3.36 to €3.42/kg. Heifer quotes were running at €3.40 to €3.47/kg. These prices exclude the 6 cent on in-spec Quality Assured stock. The cow trade also remains unchanged with the O grade cow price typically making between €2.86 and €2.94/kg.
Cattle supplies at export meat plants for the week ending 2nd of April were 1,400 head above the corresponding week in 2010 at 32,600 head. On a year to date basis, supplies are running seven per cent lower than the same period in 2010.
In the UK, trade was reportedly good over the past week due to tight supplies and steady demand helped by a strengthening trade for steaks and forequarter cuts in the run up to Easter.
Reported cattle prices from the AHDB increased slightly with GB R4L grade steers averaging Stg 293.3 pence/kg dw (equivalent to €3.33/kg dw) for the week ended 2nd April.
On the Continent, trade has improved somewhat as purchases for the Easter period continue. Best trade reported remains for forequarters and steaks.
- In Germany, the R3 young bull price is averaging €3.45/kg with the O3 cow price falling by 1/c to €2.75/kg.
- In France, Irish steer hinds are making between €4.90-5.00/kg with German Cow hinds increasing by 20/c to €4.20/kg.
- In Italy, the R3 young bull price is averaging €3.39/kg, with the O3 cow price unchanged at €2.73/kg.
