New FMD Centre Found in Southeast Bulgaria

BULGARIA - Dr Yordan Voinov will visit Sredetz municipality in the village of Granichar during a routine check of the veterinary team of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, where a new outbreak of FMD has been detected.

Experts with the agency have taken 7 samples, out of which 6 turned positive.

The infected animals are from a cattle herd, owned by a private person. The entire herd will be killed.

Executive Director Dr Yordan Voinov will visit the area in order to familiarize with the situation and take action.

On 19 March, veterinary teams with the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, during a routine check took clinical samples which tested positive for FMD 143 cows farmed near a village called Kirovo, Sredets Municipality to the border with Turkey. As of 23 March, 106 out of 143 animals were killed . The agricultural cooperative will be compensated.
