SOUTH KOREA - The FMD crisis is winding down and is expected to come to an end by mid March. The cattle sector, which was much less impacted, is still set to expand in 2011. In comparison, the swine industry is reeling after one-third of total inventories were culled, with pork production down to its lowest point in nearly 20-years.
The 2011 pork production estimate has been cut to 760,000 MT, down 33 per cent from the earlier estimate. According to a local think-tank, the local swine sector won’t recover until 2014. Beef and pork imports are expected to partially offset the local pork shortage.
