Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale Sets Record

01 March 2011

US - The Illinois Performance Tested (IPT) Bull Sale kicked off the 2011 Illinois Beef Expo this past Thursday at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield boasting the highest overall average in the sale's 43-year history.

"The sale averaged $2,980 on 77 lots of Angus, Simmental and Polled Hereford bulls," said Dave Seibert, IPT Bull Sale Manager. "This exceeded the previous record set in 2005 by $321 and the 2010 average by $462."

Since the first sale in 1968, Illinois cattle breeders have sold 4,381 bulls valued at more than $7.2 million through the sale.

"The Angus breed had the largest numbers of bulls in the sale this year with 38 head," Seibert said. "They also had a record-setting average in the sale of $3,431 which exceeded the previous breed average record by $643 set in 2005 and the 2010 average by $730."

Mr Seibert noted that the numbers of Simmental bulls were higher this year with 35 head offered in the sale. The Simmental breed averaged $2,519 — historically the second highest average for this breed in the IPT Bull Sale.

"The Polled Hereford breed had four bulls in the sale and their demand was demonstrated by the second highest breed average in the sale at $2,731 on limited numbers," Mr Seibert said.

Producers interested in viewing a breakdown of all the prices can visit the IPT Bull Sale website at www.IPTBullSale.com. The website also includes the individual bull prices from the 2011 sale and the numbers and averages from the previous 42 sales.

This sale, supported by University of Illinois Extension, the U of I Department of Animal Sciences, and consigning breeders, has developed into one of the largest performance tested bull sales in the Midwest, Seibert said. Industry partners including Vita Ferm, the Illinois Angus Association, and the Illinois Simmental Association helped make this event possible.
