South Korea Reports Eleven FMD Outbreaks

SOUTH KOREA - The South Korean veterinary authorities have reported eleven new outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in the country.

The World Organisation for Animal Health received follow-up report no. 7 on 31 December 2010.

According to the report, a total of 27140 swine were found susceptible to the disease, out of which nine cases were identified. In the case of cattle, 675 were found susceptible, 23 tested positive. All animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreaks remains unknown.

According to the report, cattle and pigs in the affected farms and within 500m around the affected farms have been culled and buried as a pre-emptive measure.

Emergency vaccination against FMD (cattle only) has been conducted since 25 December 2010. Vaccination is limited in some areas in Gyeongsanbuk-do, Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do.
