Politicians Oppose Sustainable Livestock Farming Bill

EU - The Sustainable livestock Bill proposed by Robert Flello MP had its second reading last week, however fell short of time and support.

It needed more than 100 MPs to vote yes in order to process to the next stage. The Bill called for the Government to support farmers to switch to sustainable farming systems that would benefit humans, animals and the environment.

The bill was debated in Parliament last week, but unfortunately ran out of time. It will be on the Order Paper to resume its Second Reading debate on 10 June 2011.

Many UK politicians are opposed to the bill. The animal welfare minister, Jim Paice, despite being opposed to the bill recognised that this is an issue of importance and promised to attend a conference next year to address the sustainability of the industry.
