Supplies And A$ Impact September Beef Exports

Wet weather continues to restrict the movement of cattle to sale across the eastern states (particularly in Queensland), while also serving to increase the numbers heading back out to paddocks, reports Meat and Livestock Australia. Shipments for the nine months to September remain lower overall, three per cent behind the previous year at 683,402 tonnes swt (DAFF).

Shipments to Korea for the month declined seven per cent year-on-year to 9,365 tonnes swt, although volumes remain well up for the year so far. Exports were also flat to Japan at 27,871 tonnes, and shipments to the US fell 32 per cent to 13,774 tonnes swt.

The US has taken significantly lower volumes of beef throughout 2010 despite reasonable prices for 90CL, with total shipments back 24 per cent year-on-year to 157,977 tonnes at the end of September. Although the higher A$ and reduced production has played a part, this is essentially due to much higher volumes of beef to emerging markets such as Indonesia and Russia.

Exports to Indonesia rose 48 per cent in September reaching 6,485 tonnes swt, while shipments to Russia rose 263 per cent year-on-year to 5,482 tonnes, with January to September shipments up five per cent and 151 per cent, respectively.
