Free Trade Agreements Will Undermine Food Security

IRELAND - Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) President John Bryan speaking at a meeting of world farm leaders at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks in Geneva said the fact that the Doha round continues to flounder should be welcomed by everyone who is concerned about food security, rural jobs, hunger and poverty.

He said: “Farm Leaders from every continent attending the meeting agreed that the Doha round of free trade as currently proposed will inevitably lead to extremes of volatility in prices and food availability. This will challenge political and societal leaders across the globe unless addressed.”

Mr Bryan added that unless Pascal Lamy Director General of the WTO amends the agricultural proposals in the Doha round to deal with these issues and other farmers’ concerns he should remove agriculture from the round altogether.
