Professor Chris Calkins, of the University of Nebraska, will address the conference about recent work done in America to improve carcase utilisation and upgrade lower value cuts of meat, as well as giving an overview of the US market and how GB quotas are likely to be used.

Delegates will also be given a preview of the initial findings from the research for Phase Two of the EBLEX environmental roadmap, to be launched in November, which will bring into focus the challenges facing the industry, as well as simple measures farmers can adopt to cut their environmental 'hoofprint'.

Following the launch last year of Phase One of the roadmap, Phase Two examines the relationship between the CO2 equivalent cost of production and profitability for a sample of beef and sheep enterprises, as well as quantifying water usage in production and the value of beef and sheep to the English landscape and biodiversity.

The conference, which is free to EBLEX levy payers, will take place at the Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth, on Thursday 21st October. Entitled 'Innovation and the future for the English beef and sheep sectors', the event will give delegates an insight into how changing consumer needs offer opportunities for the industry to develop new products. It will also examine how the sector can respond to external issues such as supply, profitability and the environment.

The programme will include the launch of the 2010 EBLEX Business Pointers, a set of invaluable benchmarking figures for English beef and sheep producers.

Other speakers will include Peter Allen, managing director of catering butchers Aubrey Allen, who will look at how producers and processors can meet the demands of the market from a foodservice viewpoint. Justin McCarthy, livestock editor of the Irish Farmers Journal, will give the Irish perspective on beef and sheep production.

Places for the EBLEX Annual Conference will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To reserve a place, email your details to [email protected] or call 0870 608 6610. For more details visit www.eblex.org.uk.
