No FMD Signs Seen In Miyazaki Cattle

JAPAN - The Miyazaki prefectural government said earlier this week that no abnormalities were found in safety checks it conducted on all of the more than 900,000 cows and pigs raised by livestock farmers in the southwestern Japanese prefecture, following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in April.

The Miyazaki prefectural government is expected to declare an official end to the epidemic among livestock on 27 August after the completion of the processing of the animals’ excrement at the livestock farms into compost. Since the first case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed on 20 April, the epidemic has had a severe impact on local livestock farming, forcing the prefecture to slaughter about 289,000 cows and pigs to contain the disease.
