More FMD Outbreaks in Miyazaki's Swine, Cattle

JAPAN - More of Miyazaki's have been infected with foot and mouth disease, according to the Japanese veterinary authorities.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 9 dated 15 June. According to the report, all ten outbreaks occured in Miyazaki.

A total of 18 cattle were found infected, and in the case of swine, ten animals were infected. 2597 cattle showed signs of susceptibility to the disease, while 4601 swine were susceptible. All animals were destroyed.

The cause of the outbreak is still unknown.

According to the report, four outbreaks occurred outside (but nearby) a movement control area around Kawaminami-cho in Miyazaki prefecture. All the cases showed typical clinical signs and were confirmed by PCR.

A movement restriction within 10 km around the outbreak in Saito city 2 (start date 21 May 2010) of the follow-up report No. 6 was lifted on 13 June 2010 because there has been no outbreak in the area since 23 May.
