SK Reports New FMD Outbreak in Swine

SOUTH KOREA - The South Korean veterinary authorities have reported the presence of FMD Type-O in swine.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the oubreak occured at a pig farm in Chungju City. Two animals were found to be infected by the virus, and 1000 showed susceptibility to the disease. All susceptible animals were destroyed.

A farmer at a pig farm in Chungju found a suspicious case which had vesicles in teats and reported it to the local government on 21 April. The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) affirmed that the pigs were infected with FMD virus by PCR and ELISA on 22 April. All cloven-hoofed animals within a radius of 3km from the affected farm were culled.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
