The Team will consist of JBS personnel and a select group of academicians well-versed in the food safety challenges confronting the beef industry.

The JBS Food Safety and Quality Advisory Team will collaboratively provide technical advice and recommendations to improve food safety efforts at the company.

“The JBS USA Beef Division is strongly committed to providing our customers with safe products of the highest quality,” said Dr John Ruby, Head, Technical Services, JBS USA Beef Division.

“Consistent with our vision of continually improving food safety at JBS USA, I am proud to announce the creation of the JBS Food Safety and Quality Advisory Team.”

The JBS Food Safety and Quality Advisory Team will consist of JBS USA personnel and six industry experts including Drs Gary Smith and Keith Belk from Colorado State University; Drs. H. Russell Cross, Kerri Harris, and Jeff Savell from Texas A&M University; and Dr. Guy Loneragan from West Texas A&M University. Dr. John Ruby will lead and coordinate the Team’s efforts.

In July 2007, JBS S.A. acquired Swift Foods Company, which included four beef processing facilities and three pork processing facilities.

JBS USA expanded its beef operations through the acquisition of Smithfield Beef Group, Inc., which included 4 beef processing facilities, and Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, LLC in October 2008.

This expansion made it increasingly important for the Company to strategically develop and enhance existing food safety and quality programmes.

As part of this process, JBS routinely consulted with outside experts who provided strategic advice to the Company. The formation of the Food Safety and Quality Advisory Team is a natural evolution in the Company’s ongoing food safety efforts.

“It was an exciting time for JBS in September 2009, when the Advisory Team conducted its first meeting at the JBS USA Corporate offices in Greeley, Colorado,” Dr Ruby said.

“I am confident the expert guidance the Team will provide will allow JBS to improve our current food safety efforts through the development of world-class food safety and quality programmes.”
