Help for New Vets on Farm Practice
UK - A series of six hands-on training courses has been developed by the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA), sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health, to help recently qualified vets climb the steep learning curve in their first jobs in farm practice.The six topics are lameness, fertility, mastitis, nutrition, youngstock and diagnosis, taught by experienced vets specialising in these areas.
Pfizer vet Dave Gilbert says the courses are designed to help participants develop their practical skills.
In the interests of practicality, they will all take place on dairy farms.
“It is crucial for good animal health and welfare, and the future of the profession, that new vets are supported as fully as possible in the transition from university to farm practice,” he said.
The course content and format are based on BCVA research into its members’ needs.
The first series runs at a Devon dairy farm on Wednesday afternoons, to avoid clashing with TB testing, from the end of February to mid June.
A BCVA subsidy and Pfizer’s sponsorship allow the cost per participant to be kept to £450 in total, or £75 for each of the six sessions.
