Tough seasonal conditions and a feed shortage have meant some cattle weren't in top nutritional condition at joining, and failed to get pregnant reports ABC Rural.

Esperance vet Dr Enoch Bergman says growers need to get rid of dry cows to salvage what pasture is left.

"The value of cold cows tends to slide as the season progresses as we get closer to December and January, so my advice to folks, especially if they have a little feed now, would be to wean those empties and get them off to the abattoirs, so they can capitalise on their value," he says.

"That will relieve a little bit of the strain and is probably a good financial option."
