The Wyndham Port in far north Western Australia had its busiest year on record for livestock, with 79,000 head of cattle exported via the Cambridge Gulf during the 2008-09 financial year reports ABC Rural.

That's more than double the previous year and well above the previous record of 63,000.

The first cattle shipment left in March, and it's believed the last shipment of the year for Wyndham is due out later in the week.

Chief executive of Cambridge Gulf Limited (CGL), Tony Chafer, says the cattle industry will benefit from the $10.5 million that's been allocated to the Wyndham Port through the Ord East Kimberley Development Package.

CGL has already spent money on improving the Wyndham cattle export yards this year, and Mr Chafer says an increased focus on the cattle industry has enticed a number of pastoralists to use the Wyndham Port.
