US Cattle on Feed Up One Per Cent

US - Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.5 million head on 1 October 2009.

The inventory was one per cent above 1 October 2008. The inventory included 6.42 million steers and steer calves, down one per cent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 per cent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.01 million head, up 4 per cent from 2008.

Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.39 million, 5 per cent above 2008. Net placements were 2.34 million head. During September, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 490,000, 600-699 pounds were 450,000, 700-799 pounds were 593,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 855,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.75 million, 4 per cent below 2008. This is the third lowest fed cattle marketings for the month of September since the series began in 1996.

Other disappearance totaled 47,000 during September, 8 per cent below 2008.
