The weak pound against the Euro could last as long as two to three years the National Farmers Union (NFU) Council heard earlier this week. The weak pound also presents opportunities in the Arab countries, NFU livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh said.

Mr Mackintosh said cattle prices were now firm, whilst some producers were holding on to their finished stock during seasonal price dips until the returns improved.

An EBLEX export campaign was already boosting British sales to France, said Mr Mackintosh.

He stressed how important it was that these opportunities were used by producers and the meat industry to establish a firm export market over the coming years.
