Honest Food is a Tory campaign to end dishonest food labelling. A loophole in the system allows major retailers to label any food processed or packaged in Britain as British, although the product may have come from abroad.

The Honest Food campaign proposes legislation to inform the consumer where the product originates from. Labels will state 'Made in the UK with meat from ...' when a product it manufactured in the UK but contains non-British meat. The new policy applies to all fresh and processed meats as well as dairy products.

Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Marks and Spencers have also previously added their support to the scheme. National Farmer Union (NFU) director of policy, Martin Haworth said, "The legislation will take years to come into effect so if the UK can move towards voluntary labelling of origin this will allay producers and consumers concerns'. He added that it is encouraging to see big retailers supporting UK producers.
