Beef Exports: Indonesian Officials Visit Ireland

IRELAND - The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, yesterday welcomed the current visit of veterinarians and public health officials from Indonesia to Ireland.

The visit is hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Bord Bia, and is part of the continuing efforts to enhance market access for Irish meat. The Indonesian market has been closed to Irish beef for some time.

The visiting officials' itinerary includes visits to meat plants and to the Central Veterinary Laboratory. It will allow the officials to see at first hand the strict food safety controls that are in place and will hopefully pave the way for resumption of exports to Indonesia. In 2000 - the last full year before a ban was imposed - Irish beef exports to Indonesia were valued at €28.6 million.
