King Island to Eradicate Cattle Disease

Bovine Pestivirus is in more than 80 per cent of Tasmania's cattle herds, reports ABCRural. It affects fertility and farmers' profits.

According to ABCRural, the estimated productivity costs of the virus in beef cattle can be $28 per breeder per year, and more than $80 per head for dairy cows.

Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries vet Debbie Grull has laid out a proposal to King Island farmers today, suggesting eradication of pestivirus from their herds.

She says for the plan to be successful, there must be complete farmer support.
