UAE Steps up Import Inspections
UAE - Customs officials in the United Arab Emirates are monitoring livestock imports from countries that have reported recent cases of bluetongue.The virus, which affects camels as well as cattle and sheep, is causing concern in teh UAE becasue the country imports most of its livestock from areas of Europe where the disease has been found.
The disease has been found in Europe, from where the UAE imports most of its livestock.
The Ministry of Environment and Water now require that every animal in livestock shipments coming from countries where bluetongue has been reported should be inspected individually, according to The National in Abu Dhabi.
Before a random sample of about 10 per cent of each shipment was inspected.
Animals can only be imported if the supplier has a licence from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) stating that the country of origin complies with health standards in the OIE’s terrestrial animal health code.
