Q. How quickly do I need to vaccinate animals that have been purchased at a market in England, which may be unvaccinated (vaccination not compulsory in England)?

A. Within 14 days.

Q. If I purchased an animal at a Scottish market how will I know if that animal has been vaccinated and if so when?

A.  You will have to ask the purchaser for proof of vaccination, which could take the form of a simple letter giving the date of vaccination and the animal’s identity, if appropriate.

Q. Will I be able to use another manufacturer’s BTV8 vaccine on my stock next year? Will I need to give already vaccinated cattle a double vaccination again in 2010 if they have already been vaccinated?

A. You will be able to use any other manufacturer’s vaccine next year.  Cattle will only need a single dose of vaccine to boost their immunity.  Cattle being vaccinated for the first time in 2010 will need two doses for their first course of vaccine.

Q. If I have vaccinated my stock in Jan 2009 will I need to do so again in 2010 or can I leave them to say March if calving or lambing dates have changed?

A. You should speak to your vet about the dates for boosters in 2010.

Q. Will a vaccinated cow with a calf under 3 months of age be able to be sold at auction in Scotland once the vector free period ends?

A. Yes.

Q. If I purchase an animal at a market in England how will I know if that animal has been vaccinated and if so when?

A. The new owner would have to get written assurances from the seller.
