The number of beef heifersin- calf also increased by six per cent over the same period.

These figures were gathered by DARD in its December 2008 sample survey of NI farms and were published last week. This is the first time that the survey has reported an increase in the number of beef cows since December 2005.

This year’s survey also shows the first significant increase in heifers-in-calf and these developments may be the first concrete signs of renewed confidence in the industry among producers.
