BPEX and EBLEX organised a food fair, supported by the High Commission in Nicosia, at the end of last month.

Six English companies took part in the exhibition showing bacon, sausages, ham, beef, lamb and cheese.

The exhibition was the centrepiece of a trade mission that included a dinner reception for Cyprus importers and the hospitality industry with Peter Millett, the High Commissioner as guest of honour.

The exhibition included cookery and butchery demonstrations to present the best of English produce.

The Cyprus Butchers’ Association, Chefs’ Association, Cyprus Olympic Chefs Team, supported the event.

BPEX and EBLEX Export Manager Jean-Pierre Garnier said, "Cyprus is a small but attractive market for English meat.

"It has a large expatriate community and a growing tourist trade. It is also a wealthy market in its own right and is comparatively less affected by the present economic downturn.

"Above all, we were responding to local demand for English meat and meat products.

"There was a strong turnout from importers, wholesalers, retailers, butchers and the main restaurants. A number of contracts with distributors were negotiated for English sausages, bacon, cooked ham, beef and cheese."
