Argentina May Import Beef by 2012

ARGENTINA - According to a report from the Argentine Regional Consortia of Agriculture organisation, Argentina may be forced to import beef by 2012.

Argentina's cattle stock has not risen since 2005, despite increasing amounts of cattle sent to factories resulting in a reduced national stock.

The report states that producers are turning to crops such as soybeans, wheat and maize to take advantage of the international prices.

Local demand remains high with national beef consumption per capital at 69kg, the highest in the world (the average American eats 43kg).

Argentinean export shipments fell by 17 per cent over the first 6 months of 2008 and it is reported that Argentine suppliers have been unable to fulfil contracts to supply certain beef cuts in Europe.
