According to Farmer's Guardian, more than 2,500 farmers are now producing animals to the RSPCA’s Freedom Food standards, and the brand is expected to grow as more supermarkets push higher welfare produce.

This summer has seen the highest number of farmers sign up to the scheme since it began 15 years ago, with 115 applicants in July alone.

John Akehurst, marketing controller of Freedom Food told Farmer's Guardian: “The fact that we have seen such a dramatic uptake in the scheme is very encouraging.

“There is a very clear demand for higher welfare foods both from retailers and consumers, and these findings show there is ample opportunity for growth in this market.”
