US Farmers Oppose JBS-Swift Takeover
US - Farm lobby groups in the US appear to be opposed to the takeover of National Beef Packing and Smithfield’s beef operations, by the Brazilian giant JBS-Swift.
According to the Argentine Beef Packers S.A., this acquisition would also include the Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feed-lots, which would make JBS, the largest beef operation in the USA.
There have been open letters, written to the US Cattle Producers and to the Senate Investigation Committee, by lobby groups opposed the takeover.
The letters to the US Department of Justice, lay out reasons why the takeover should not be permitted.
Is essence the main argument seems to be, that the takeover would take the competitiveness out of the beef industry, leaving farmers prices in the hands of a few large players.
The lobbyists have succeeded in getting 19 members of Congress, to write letters to the Department of Justice, opposing the takeover.
