World Unites Against Live Export Cruelty
AUSTRALIA - A worldwide protest against the Australian Government’s support of cruel live exports has battered their international international reputation for good animal welfare, says an animal welfare group.The Australian RSPCA says that, in a show of unity, animal welfare groups around the world have been writing to Prime Minister Rudd directly to raise serious animal welfare concerns over transport.
The global protest is part of the Handle with Care campaign against the long distance transport of animals for slaughter.
Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of live animals with more than five million sheep, cattle and goats being shipped for slaughter overseas every year. In 2007, more than 38,000 of these animals died en route to their destination. The Australian RSPCA says that following the stress and suffering of long distance transportation, animals disembark often only to be handled and then slaughtered in the most barbaric way.
"What makes this trade all the more terrible is that the live export of animals for slaughter is unnecessary. Australia already successfully exports chilled and frozen meat all over the world. We also have Halal-certified export abattoirs supplying Halal meat to customers with religious requirements." A report said.
