Japan Lifts Ban on U.S. Beef Imports From Smithfield Plant

JAPAN - Japan on Thursday lifted a ban on beef imports from a U.S. meatpacker after reviewing the company's steps to improve safety measures, the Agriculture Ministry said.

The ministry said it has resumed imports from the plant in Tolleson, Arizona, run by the Smithfield Beef Group, effective immediately, after confirming the company has improved safeguard measures.

The ministry said the report from the plant said measures included a separation of Japan-bound shipments from others and enhanced employee training.

Japan suspended imports from the plant in February after customs officials found 700 kilograms of round beef in 25 boxes that had not been ordered. The shipment from the Smithfield plant came with 20 tons of beef shoulder.
