HONG KONG - The Health & Food Bureau is keeping close contact with the Ministry of Commerce on the live cattle supply. It said beef traders should not take any drastic action and should work with the import agent to tackle the issue in a sensible manner.

If beef retailers have operation difficulties due to a tight cattle supply, they can approach the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department for temporary relief measures and assistance.

Expressing concern over the current live cattle supply shortage, the bureau said it is aware of beef traders' worries. The import agent will meet with trade representatives tonight to discuss the matter.

To assure an adequate supply of live cattle to Hong Kong, the import agent is working to secure cattle sourcing and to narrow the price gap between Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Noting cattle prices on the Mainland have surged 40% since early this year, the bureau said the price there remains high and supply is tight causing pressure for further price rises.
