Metritis in dairy cows
I work in the dairy industry in Australia in high production dairies. Every farm I have worked on has, to varying degrees, had issues with metritis in fresh cows. This can range from acute metritis in which the cow has voluminous discharge, high temperature, ketosis and loss of milk yield, to the more sub-clinical - no obvious discharge or effects other than difficulty in getting in calf.
Retained placenta (RFM) is closely linked to hypocalcaemia, so correct lead feeding should prevent this occurance.
My question is this: do less intensively farmed dairy cows suffer from this condition much or is it mainly the cows that we ask too much of that succumb more frequently? I am also curious about the incidences in beef cattle.
I would be very interested to get some feedback on this issue.
